W3LL PEOPLE: A Second Look

Nearly 4 years ago, I reviewed a line of natural beauty products called W3LL PEOPLE. Here is my review from September 2009. While I did enjoy the foundation stick back then, nothing else really wowed me and I admit that I have not tried another one of their products since that initial review.

W3LLPEOPLE

Well, I am SO glad that the folks at W3LL PEOPLE contacted me once again, because they have added some new products and made their existing products better. I was sent a lovely blox of products and have had a chance to try more of the products out.

I will review some of them today, the others in the coming weeks.

Here are my thoughts:

Narcissist Foundation & Concealer ($38) -- I liked this product back in 2009 and I *love* this product now. I compared it back then to the old Estee Lauder Minute Makeup minus the horrible chemicals and I stand by that. Actually, it reminds me of what would happen if you were to combine Estee Lauder Minute Makeup with Vapour Organic Beauty's Illusionist Concealer stick. This is like a hybrid of those two products.

When I tried it before, the color was all wrong. This time, I tried the shade called Narcissist 2, which is perfect for me.  I normally wear the CC cream/tinted moisturizer from Jane Iredale, so I used this to spot treat the red areas on my nose and as a dark circle concealer. It is perfect for both uses. It doesn't cake, crease, melt off, etc.  I even use this as an eye makeup base for my Urban Decay Naked Palette.

The ingredients are absolutely fabulous, too:

Zinc Oxide, Titanium Dioxide, Iron Oxides, Ultramarine Blue, Mica, Kaolin Clay, Serecite, Silica, Organic Aloe Barbadenis (Aloe)*, Matricaria recutita (Chamomile)**, Camellia Sinensis (Green Tea)*
*USDA Organic, **QAI

Grade: A+

HEDONIST LUMINOUS MINERAL BRONZER ($23) -- The second product I am reviewing today is the powder bronzer. My shade is #52 (Medium). I have mentioned being pleased with my facial bronzers, as I like Silk Naturals Tahiti Sweetie, 100% Pure, and Organic Wear. This one is, frankly, far superior.  It is more expensive, but it excels in all categories--from blendability to ingredients to how natural the color looks.

What I love most is that the term "luminous" is, indeed, appropriate for once! Half the time "luminous" ends of meaning that I end of looking like a glittery disco ball. Not with this bronzer! It really is just a naturally radiant, subtle glow of a tan!

Again, the ingredients is W3LL PEOPLE really are superior to almost every other "natural" brand of makeup. These are TRULY natural!

Mica, Iron Oxides, Titanium Dioxide. May contain Ultramarine Blue, Ferric Ferrocyanide, Organic Aloe Barbadenis (Aloe)*, Matricaria recutita (Chamomile)**, Camellia Sinensis (Green Tea)*
*USDA Organic, **QAI

Grade: A+ for this one, too!

The Chic & Green Bottom Line:

W3LL PEOPLE is a really stellar cosmetics company with lovely modern packaging (they are also an eco-friendly company), GREAT ingredients, and they're also cruelty-free. I can highly recommend these products.

Summer Beauty Favorites 2013

Monday, June 17, 2013

Between end of school year activities, soccer, lacrosse, and work, I have been less frequent with my reviews and I apolgize! I have been trying lots of summer beauty items and wanted to share my most favorite products with you for the summer.

First up is Jane Iredale Dream Tint Tinted Moisturizer. I would definitely consider this product a CC cream.  CC creams are all the rage right now and even though this is called a Tinted Moisturizer, it performs like a CC cream.  In fact, I have tried all of the latest CC creams, from Smashbox to Tarte and this one definitely performs as well.  In fact, this one is by far my favorite of the several I have tried.

Why?  Jane Iredale's makeup products with sunscreen provide broad spectrum protection and I always feel comfortable having them on my face. I also love how easily this product blends right into my skin. I have tried Light-Medium and Medium and right now the Medium is my best match because I apply Tantasia to my face twice a week to build up a very natural hint of summer color to my face.

Back to the Dream Tint -- it gives NATURAL and semi sheer coverage.  It evens out my skin but doesn't look like makeup.  You can still see my freckles, which is OK. It last well without melting off.  I also wear this when I am working out, whether inside doing pilates or outside for a run or walk. It protects my skin in the sun and doesn't fade away.

It is my favorite CC cream! In fact, I really think Jane Iredale is my favorite overall beauty line. I have never been let down and know that the quality will always be phenomenal and the ingredients safe.

Another summertime favorite?  Miracle Skin Transformer Body Lotion by Sarah McNamara. I use this in Glow Enhancer for 3/4 of the year and the Bronze Enhancer for this time of year. It is FOOLPROOF and unlike self tanners, there is NO odor. It is a body lotion with SPF of 20 that has a very subtle shimmer and adds a bronze glow (never orange). I apply it to my arms and legs and it is almost like applying a BB cream to your body. The ingredients are MAINLY natural. Purists will want to find something else, but this is paraben free, phthalate free, and fragrance free.

I've told you before about Jamberry Nails.  These are fun nail "shields" that you just stick on after warming with your hair dryer.  They adhere and last for up to two weeks. The average wear for me (and I am not easy on my hands) is one full week.

They have lots of great new designs for summer.  I am wearing them now -- I chose the America design the other day because my son had a Flag Day celebration at his elementary school:

Another favorite summer beauty MUST HAVE for me?  Not Your Mother's Beach Babe Texturizing Sea Salt Spray. This has been a godsend for me because I have been growing out my pixie since February and I now had fullness, layers, and separation. It is keeping my sane until it is my ideal length.

Bonus--it is less than $6 at  Ulta.

My next summer favorite can be found in the Nature's Marketplace section at Wegmans. It's the Badger Sunscreen SPF 30 All Season Face Stick. I use this on my lips. It is also good for touch ups on top of the ears or nose.

On a hot day, nothing feels better than spritizing on a cool burst of hydration and that is what I get with my Pommist Hydration Spray from Jane Iredale. I store mine in the fridge and spritz it on to set my makeup in the morning.  I also like to spritz it for periodic cool hydration during the day to keep my face looking fresh. It is formualted with pomegranate, white tea, and a host of other botanicals. I LOVE this!

I already mentioned Jane Iredale in this post (twice!), but I am going to end with this line as well because of these two words: Beach Plum. This is my most favorite summertime lip shade. EVER. It is gorgeous.  I have been wearing this almost every single day since it arrived and I simply adore it.  Pure Gloss is the name of this collection of glosses from Jane Iredale and they really are better than any gloss I have ever tried.  The packaging is gorgeous, but more importantly, the product itself is stellar!

Healthier Iced Vanilla Latte Recipe

Monday, June 10, 2013

If you have been reading this blog over the past 6 years, you know I am just a wee bit hooked on coffee.

I am so proud that I have been able to cut back quite a bit (I was drinking the equivalent of more than one pot per day) and am down to 3 or fewer cups a day. This is HUGE for me.

As we head into summer, I have a thing for iced coffee drinks. Unfortunately, unless you have a traditional iced coffee without add ins, you are basically just drinking away your calories.

Today, I am making over a cafe favorite: the Starbucks Caffe Vanilla Fappuccino. This super delicious iced drink isn't for those who are trying to lose or maintain weight though.

A grande (AKA medium) version contains 430 calories and 72 grams of carbs (I stick to under 50 for my whole day) -- a whopping 69 grams of carbs in this drink are sugar carbs. Oy! Not good!

Today I have recreated this treat and have made it MUCH healthier! It doesn't taste exactly the same, but it is still absolutely delicious.

*8 ounces of chilled brewed coffee (You can shop for Starbucks coffee by clicking the ad to the right on my blog. French Roast is great in this)

*1 cup of unsweetened vanilla coconut milk (you can substitute; I used So Delicious)

*1 t. pure vanilla extract

*1 scoop vanilla whey protein powder

*Ice cubes

Just blend it all together and ENJOY it!

I figured the nutritional info on my version for you. Note, I do NOT count calories. This has been a major component to my weight loss. I count carbs and sugar--

Coffee-- 0 carbs, 0 calories, 0 sugar

Coconut Milk-- 45 calories, 1 net carb

Action Whey-- 90 calories, 3 net carbs (4 total -1 for fiber to equal 3 net carbs)

Optional Whipped Cream--(1 T.) 50 calories, 0 sugar, 0 carbs

I actually topped mine with a bit of real whipped cream. I use a bit of heavy cream and a dash of whey protein in vanilla for flavor and a bit of natural sweetness. You can add unsweetened cocoa powder or cinnamon to the whipped cream if you like as well. My version WITH the whipped cream is 185 calories and 4 grams of carbs. Of course, you can absolutely skip the whipped cream if you are counting your calories. Keep in mind mine also makes you a BIG glass--or two small ones!

A super healthy recipe!

On March 4, I completely cut out all grains --although I just started with wheat, initially. I eat loads of veggies, as well as lean meats, cheese, plain Greek yogurt, berries, nuts, and seeds. Sometimes, I have a banana if it is made into a treat like the one below. No added sugars in anything. I also have Emerald Essentials Action Whey mixed into a smoothie (you can use any brand).

I do not eat any grains. I drink water, unsweetened sunflower seed milk, unsweetened chocolate almond milk, unsweetened ice tea, and coffee (which I have managed to cut down on). On weekends if we're hanging out with neighbors, I will have the occasional Michelob Ultra 55 (2 carbs) or a drink with the yummy (no carbs/sugar) iced cake vodka.

That, in a nutshell, is how I have lost more than 20 pounds and have dropped two sizes.

A couple weeks back, we took the kids for ice cream. Ah, ice cream. It was hot and I was in the mood for some chocolate almond custard. Knowing how sugar makes me feel, I didn't give into temptation.

Why? Because I had been tinkering around in the kitchen and created a delicious chocolate almond frozen treat with my whey protein powder.

Do you have an ice cream maker? Any type will do. Mine is a little one that was less than $30. It works well and makes a yummy treat in less than 30 minutes. My husband and my boys went to the local frozen yogurt place where you add a bunch of toppings and pay per pound. While they were gone, I whipped this up for myself.
This recipe yields 1 serving–you can certainly alter it to make more.
*1 ripe banana
*1 scoop whey protein powder (your choice of flavor–I used vanilla)
*1 tablespoon of cocoa powder
*3/4 cup of unsweetened almond milk
*Optional: almonds to garnish

*Warm the almond milk and cocoa powder either in the microwave for 40 seconds or on the stove over low heat. Stir. Put sliced banana and whey protein powder in a blender and pour the almond milk/cocoa mix. Blend. Pour into your ice cream maker and churn until ready. My ice cream was done in less than 20 minutes! I topped with almonds.
I felt no need to add any type of sweetener. The banana and whey protein provided plenty of natural sweetness. If you feel you need more, go ahead and add a bit of raw honey or natural sweetener of your choice, but I do not think it is needed.
This “ice cream” is creamy and chocolate-y and just plain delicious!
