Review: Honeybee Gardens

Monday, March 5, 2012

Not too long ago, a friend gave me a mascara from Honeybee Gardens to try out. I still had to finish my favorite-- Physicians Formula Organic Wear Jumbo Lash Mascara, so I didn't get a chance to try it out until about 2 weeks ago.

Wow with a capital "W" is what I have to say.  Finding a decent natural mascara isn't easy. My favorites have been discussed a great deal here-- the Organic Wear, Tarte Lash Hugger, and 100% Pure Fruit Pigmented Mascara. All are lovely, even though the 100% Pure does much better for me as a top lash mascara only because of smudging.

I've been pretty loyal to my Organic Wear, but decided to try the Honeybee Gardens. It is awesome. My main issue with natural mascara has always been smudging by mid afternoon. With Honeybee Gardens Truly Natural Mascara, my lashes get the thickening I want (my lashes are quite long, but don't have lots of volume).  I use my lash curler and apply two coats of Honeybee Gardens and it lasts very well.  All too often, mascara--even natural mascara--irritates my eyes.  I don't have this problem with Honeybee Gardens.  In fact, I have to tell you that it has managed to replace Organic Wear as my favorite. It is also comparable in terms of price, as it retails for $10.99.

Impressed with the mascara, I placed an order for other products last week. I decided to order the Supernatural Mineral Foundation (a pressed formula), San Francisco Lipstick, Bronzer (I just ran out of Everyday Minerals) and one of the fab new eye compacts in Cosmopolitan. I also was sent the Smokey Eye Palette to review.

You know how picky I can be. Sometimes too picky.

As soon as my mail came, I ripped open my box and started to play. I opened up my Cosmopolitan palette first. What great colors.  I had on Cream from Silk Naturals already, but hadn't finished my eyes. I applied Kashmir (matte brown) in the crease and Satin Sheets just above for a little wash of gold.  There are also two pinks, but not bright pinks or ones that aren't wearable.  I never wear pink on my eyes, but these are neutral and subtle enough to become staples. They also do NOT make me look tired or like I have bloodshot eyes. These are very wearable shades.

The actual compact is adorable and comes with a lovely bamboo brush. The brush is cruelty free.

The palette I am even more blown away by is definitely going to be my go-to palette for evening makeup. It's called Rock the Smokey Eye and all 4 shades are stellar.  Again, you get a bamboo double sided brush (one side is a sponge applicator, the other is a true brush) and a super fun compact. The 4 shades are a matte white (Nirvana), metallic gray (Chrome), a shimmery plum called Chivalry and Falon, which is dark, nearly black charcoal. Falon, when applied with a liner brush, makes for a great eye liner as well.

This palette is just what you need to achieve the perfect smokey eye. Each palette sells for $29.99.

I also am in love with the Truly Natural Lipstick ($11.99). I ordered a shade called San Francisco. It is a shimmering neutral pinkish brown that is really lovely. I am definitely going to order more. One of the biggest compromises as someone who has gone mostly green with her beauty routine is finding a good lipstick--not a gloss--but a stick. I have that with Silk Naturals, but I also love more options. Honeybee Gardens formulates a fantabulous lipstick, ladies!

I ordered a bronzer called Healthy Glow Mineral Bronzer in Sunkissed. I am still on the fence about this.  I've been using either the Everyday Minerals or 100% Pure bronzers for quite some time now. This one, though, is a true bargain at just $6.99. I think what is bothering me about it is the fact that the bronzer is in a small pot.  I am going to pour it into a more shallow, larger pot for my convenience.

It is a bit more shimmery that I am used to, but it is still nice.  The texture is lovely and it doesn't come off as orange on my fair, cool skin. While I am confident I would repurchase the other items, I am still not quite sure about this--I just need to see if I am happier with it in a different container. This is messy as is just because you need to pour some out (there is no sifter for this loose product) and dip your brush in.

I also ordered a foundation.  I have a couple products I really love, and depending on the coverage I prefer, I opt to use one or the other. I typically use 100% Pure Fruit Pigmented Tinted Moisturizer.  Sometimes, though, I like the extra coverage from mineral makeup.  My tried and true for the past few years has been Everyday Minerals.  The problem, though, is that they don't seem to keep the colors around that I love and match my skin best. Once I get attached to a shade, it seems it gets discontinued.

Eager to test this out, I immediately put on the Pressed Mineral Foundation in Supernatural ($9.99) over my 100% Pure Luminous Primer. This is another winning product.  It feels so silky smooth and I love the buildable coverage.  Right now, I am using my Everyday Minerals kabuki brush to apply, but the handle is breaking and it's time for a new one.

I held off on ordering the compact and brush from Honeybee Gardens and when I was over browsing at Enviroproducts World, I found that they also offer Honeybee Gardens.  I ordered the compact and brush at a discounted price ($8.39 vs. $11.99 for the compact and $8.67 vs. $10.99 for the brush) and they should arrive this week.

OK, back to the foundation review. This is stellar.  Have you ever tried the Jane Iredale Pure Pressed Mineral Foundation?  It is $40 for the refill and $52 with the compact. The foundation from Honeybee Gardens feels nearly identical to the Jane Iredale.  In fact, when I put this on, I kept thinking, "Wow, this is so much like the pricey Jane Iredale. Same silky texture."

I am not a makeup snob--but I am critical of ingredients and wear.  I have never believed that you need to spend a fortune to have high quality makeup or skin care.  I know better.  I speak with confidence when I tell you that Honeybee Gardens is one of the best natural makeup brands on the market.  I am really impressed with what I've tried.  I also have to say that the customer service I received at Honeybee Gardens was top-notch.  I really made it complicated because I decided to add on to my order and the company called me up and I had such a great customer care experience.  Not only does Honeybee Gardens excel at customer care, but they excel at creating fabulous makeup!

*I was sent a palette to review.  The rest I purchased on my own. My views are complete mine and have not been influenced in any way.
