DIY Gift Idea: Mason Jar Cupcakes

Monday, November 23, 2009

All over the web, you can find jarred cupcakes to give as gifts (or eat on your own). At prices between $4 and $9 each plus shipping, making your own at home is an affordable way to make delicious gifts for friends and family.

This year I am making two varieties to give as gifts and will give 2 jars (2 flavors) as gifts.

I'm doing my favorite Red Velvet Cake with Cream Cheese Frosting and a Yellow Cake with Chocolate Sour Cream Icing.

Both are delicious!

First, choose the type of cake you'd like to make. Last year, I shared my favorite Red Velvet Cupcake and Cream Cheese Frosting recipes. To make this one, click here for the recipe.

The next selection includes to recipes from the recipe site, All Recipes. To make the Yellow Cake recipe I always use, click right here. The Chocolate Sour Cream Icing recipe is super yummy and can be found right here.

To create your cupcakes in jars, follow these simple steps.

First of all, spray your muffin tins with nonstick cooking spray. Bake as directed.

Get out your clean, sterilized mason jars. The yellow cake recipe will give you enough for a dozen cupcakes--or 6 jarred delights.

When your cupcakes are cool and you have removed them from the muffin pans, cut the tops off. Save the tops, if desired. I save them and make cupcake top sandwiches with icing in the middle for my boys (and me, of course).

Gently put one cupcake into the bottom of the jar. It will be a tight squeeze. Add a nice layer of icing. Now add another cupcake layer. Follow with frosting. You can then add sprinkles, chocolate chips, candy pieces, etc. if you desire.

Put the lid on tightly.

Add tags, ribbons, adorn with anything you'd like!
