I have these cloths from Peanut Tree Designs and highly recommend them!


I received a comment from a reader, GoGreen, yesterday. She was seeking skin care advice for her oily skin.

Here is what she said:


Hi! Thanks for all the great info. Can you suggest a daily regimen for acne prone, oily skin. I think I have an allergy to chamomile. For example, removing makeup, moisturizing after washing my face, toner, etc. I am not sure what oils and/or other ingredients to steer clear from and what ones tend to be okay for oily/acne skin except for grapeseed oil because you suggested that to me yesturday in the Aunt Nancy's goat's milk soap. Whatever suggestions you have would be very helpful. I'm afraid to go Whole Foods and just try stuff because I've had bad experiences in the past. Thanks!

There are many wonderful options in stores and online for your oily skin. You'll also find great products right in your own kitchen.


Take Off Makeup

Let's start with makeup removal. To keep it simple, you will need one oil to remove it. It takes off eye makeup, waterproof mascara, lipstick, foundation, etc. Just apply a dime sized amount and massage into damp skin. Gently wipe off with a baby washcloth or gentle organic terrycloth washcloth. My friend, beth, makes chenille ones and I am using these now. Until she decides to sell them, though, I highly recommend the washcloths from Peanut Tree Designs.

I recommend a very gentle washcloth (washing & drying between uses) to very gently exfoliate and remove the last traces of makeup.

I'd like to talk a bit about why Jojoba is what I recommend.


Jojoba Oil is wonderful for the skin because it mimics your skins own sebum, drawing excess oil out. Jojoba oil is pure and it is natural. I use only 100% pure and organic golden jojoba oil. This oil is hydrating without being greasy. It will not promote acne or aggravate an existing case of acne. You can buy this in Whole Foods. Lather Up

I highly recommend following with a high quality and ultra gentle cleanser--the Aunt Nancy's Goat Milk Soap with Olive Oil would be ideal for the oily skin on your face. The natural lactic acid is wonderful at gently exfoliating dead skin, while imparting a soft texture to the skin. The grapeseed oil present in the soap is fabulous for oily skin. It is a non-greasy oil, is very lightweight and absorbs quickly into the skin. It provides great nourishment for oily skin types without aggravating acne. It contains antioxidants and has high amounts of linoleic acid.

The soap also has coconut oil, which possesses antimicrobial properties. Some people don't like coconut oil on the face, but I have seen it work wonders on oily skin types.

The olive oil and canola in this soap will also benefit your oily skin. It sounds silly, but oil actually is great for oily skin. It just depends on the type used. The oils will dissolve sebum produced by your skin without stripping. When you use harsh ingredients such as alcohol, benzoyl peroxide or sulfates, your skin becomes stripped and actually produces more oil to compensate.

What I like about this particular bar for oilier skin on the sensitive side is that it is 100% fragrance free.


Refresh

Traditional "toners" contain harsh alcohol and do nothing for the skin. For your oily skin, you can make a very simple skin tonic at home. I will soon be posting my Strawberry & Lavender Facial Mist recipe (although finding ingredients is much easier in the summer), but for a simple recipe using what you probably have in your kitchen right now can be done!

Get a sterile bottle or jar.

Boil some distilled water (at the grocery store you can find a gallon for under $1) and pour 1 cup of water into a mug. Add 3 green tea bags. Steep for 5 minutes. Remove bags and cool for until it's lukewarm.

Pour into a sterile bottle or jar. Add in 2-3 T. of apple cider vinegar (I prefer raw and unfiltered, but any will work), a squeeze each of lemon juice and honey. Shake to combine. Store in fridge.

Use daily after cleansing.

Pamper With an Easy Kitchen Remedy

A couple times a week, I would recommend using an easy do it yourself mask. You probably have the ingredients in your kitchen right now.

Nourish

For oily skin, people often skip a moisturizer. This is a big mistake, as your skin still needs to be hydrated. Apply a lightweight moisturizer to the skin. You can use my facial cream or right in Walmart or Target you can find a decent moisturizer for oily skin called Alba Botanica Rainforest Skincare Hydrating Oil Control Moisturizer. Your most affordable and 100% natural option is a simple application of Grapeseed Oil (a couple drops) will work well to nourish your skin without drying. Apply this to damp skin and let in sink in.

Spot Treat Acne

Tea Tree Oil is one of my favorite essential oils. It is wonderful for oily skin, is antibacterial and helps to dissolve oils. You can add this to grapeseed oil to use as your moisturizer. I also have used a couple drops of the oil right on acne spots. It helps with breakouts just as effectively as harsh chemically-derived ingredients, too!
