Years ago --we're talking senior year of high school or early college--I used to love a deep conditioner from Bath and Body Works with banana and mint. Later, they reformulated the recipe as part of their Hairworks line and discontinued the chemical-laden "natural" mask a few years back.

What I liked most was the scent. I was thinking about that the other day when I was tinkering in the kitchen.

Here is my version of a 100% natural banana peppermint hair mask. If you make too much, put some on your husband and kids, as this will not keep.



Ingredients:

1 ripe banana

10 drops peppermint essential oil

1 T. coconut milk (at my local Wegmans, it is in the Goya aisle)

1/2 t. avocado oil (omit if your hair is oily...you can use other carrier oils if desired)


Why the ingredients?

Let's look at the benefits:

Bananas--This fruit is full of folic acid, potassium, as well as vitamins A, B, and C. There is anecdotal evidence that bananas applied to the hair can help regrow hair. Banana is nourishing and the consistency lends itself to being the perfect component to bind the mask.

Peppermint Essential Oil--This is my favorite essential oil to stimulate the scalp. It can help to stimulate hair growth and control dandruff. It is ideal for a scalp massage! It can help soothe a dry scalp as well.

Coconut Milk--I have talk to you about my love of coconut oil before. I slather this on my skin and hair all the time. Coconut Milk has many of the same attributes. It will soften your hair, add a silky sheen to it, and help promoted hair growth and prevent breakage.

Avocado Oil--high in plant sterols, this oil helps to stimulate and heal the scalp. It is particularly helpful to those with dry hair and irritated scalps.


To Make:

Mash the banana and simply add in your other ingredients! Voila! You have a hair mask.


How to Use:

This is ideally a pre-shampoo treatment. I apply this to damp hair and massage in thoroughly, taking care to work it into my scalp. You'll feel the tingle from the mint.

Rinse in 10 to 20 minutes, depending on hair and scalp dryness. I don't recommend using overnight or longer than the 20 minutes, because it can make your hair and scalp too oily past that time.

Shampoo your hair.

Rinse as usual.

I recommend using once a week.
